Spiritual Greatness

Tonight we're going to talk about aspiring to spiritual greatness. As I was thinking about this, the first thing that struck me was how many halls of fame there are. There are so many! There's the Football Hall of Fame, the Baseball Hall of Fame, and even a Firefighters Hall of Fame. No offense to firefighters—that's fine. I even noticed that the Firefighters Hall of Fame in Phoenix is called the Hall of Flame, which I thought was pretty clever.

I bring this up to underscore the idea that in every area of endeavor, there are people who aspire to greatness. And that greatness is rewarded in a variety of ways. For instance, there's financial success if you achieve great wealth, or the accumulation of power. There's also recognition of one's accomplishments through trophies and awards, and of course, the ultimate honor: induction and immortalization into some Hall of Fame. Your name stays there forever—you're preserved in a museum if you will. It's a great thing.

If you Google "Hall of Fame," you'll find there are, at last count, 257 different halls or walks of fame for every imaginable activity or achievement. Imagine—257 different halls of fame!

However, there's one category missing. One area that has no trophy, no memorial in a building, no Hall of Fame. That's the recognition for those who achieve spiritual greatness. There's no Spiritual Greatness Hall of Fame in New York, Chicago, or Oklahoma City.

Of course, that's not to say that one cannot become great spiritually. Someone absolutely can achieve greatness in the Kingdom of God, even if there's no earthly trophy or hall built in their honor.
