Is Jesus God? How can He be both God and Man?

This is arguably the most central question in Christian theology.

  • Answer: Yes, the Bible presents Jesus as fully God and fully man, a concept known as the Hypostatic Union.

  • Biblical Explanation:

    • Fully God: Jesus is called "God with us" (Emmanuel, Matthew 1:23) and the "Word" who "was God" and "became flesh" (John 1:1, 14). The disciple Thomas directly calls Him "My Lord and my God" (John 20:28). Jesus also claimed oneness with the Father: "I and the Father are one" (John 10:30).

    • Fully Man: He experienced human hunger (Matthew 4:2), thirst (John 19:28), tiredness (John 4:6), and sorrow (John 11:35). He was born of a woman (Galatians 4:4) and grew in wisdom and stature (Luke 2:52).

  • Theological Explanation: The union of two natures (divine and human) in one person (Jesus Christ) was essential. As fully God, His sacrifice had infinite value to pay the penalty for the sins of the entire world (1 John 2:2). As fully man, He could truly represent humanity and die in our place (Hebrews 2:14, 17)
